Eating disorders and addictions can manifest in various ways and can be extremely dangerous if left untreated. Struggling with an eating disorder or addiction can lead to feelings of isolation, being stuck, a lack of control, being lost, hopelessness, and anger. There are protective elements and underlying intentions at the core of each disorder, indicating that there is a survival function to everything, whether it is intentional or not. Therefore, let's work on understanding what you're going through, learning why it has developed, and teaching the nervous system to regulate in a more effective way for you today.

Trauma, by definition, is an experience that overwhelms the central nervous system, resulting in a change to the way we process and recall memories (Van der Kolk, B. A., 2015). When this happens repeatedly, complex issues can begin to develop. One way the nervous system adapts to this overwhelm is through dissociation, which can be incredibly helpful in times of need. However, a chronic state of disconnection can cause impairment to our mental, emotional, social, and physical well-being.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a type of trauma therapy that accesses the natural healing centers in the brain. These healing centers can be used intentionally through bilateral stimulation to desensitize and reorganize information that gets “stuck” in the nervous system during trauma and eventually results in triggers. This type of therapy can help to decrease or even eliminate common mental health issues such as panic attacks, flashbacks, obsessive thinking, hopelessness, sexual shame, self-hate, dissociation, unhealthy attachment styles, defensiveness, anger and low self-esteem to name a few. EMDR Therapy can be utilized through Telehealth/Virtual appointments as well!

EMDR doesn’t have to be the only option for therapy. There are many types of effective and life-changing therapeutic approaches. Some of the evidence based theories and therapies that inform Revive’s approach include the Polyvagal Theory, Adaptive Information Processing (AIP), Theory of Structural Dissociation, Dialectic Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP), and Internal Family Systems (IFS).

How does EMDR Therapy work?
EMDR accesses a natural healing process you already have built into your nervous system. Through something called Bilateral Stimulation (BLS), EMDR helps to reprocess traumatic or overwhelming experiences and allows the brain and body to communicate in order to come to resolution or true healing. EMDR can result in decreased symptoms as a result of giving yourself the opportunity to review traumatic information, organize it, and build tolerance so that it no longer controls your life.
What does EMDR Therapy treat?
EMDR can treat a surprisingly wide variety of issues, including Anxiety Disorders, Depression, PTSD/C-PTSD, OCD, Eating Disorders, Addictions, Dissociation, and more!
Additional preparation and individualized precautions may be needed in providing EMDR Therapy to individuals experiencing brain impairment, suicidal ideation, psychosis, dissociative disorders, or active addiction.
The 8 Phases of EMDR Therapy
1. History-Taking: Assessing your background and identifying trauma.
2. Preparation: Establishing trust and learning coping strategies.
3. Assessment: Identifying target memories and emotions.
4. Desensitization: Using eye movements to reduce emotional distress.
5. Installation: Strengthening positive beliefs.
6. Body Scan: Ensuring physical reactions to trauma are resolved.
7. Closure: Stabilizing and returning to a calm state.
8. Reevaluation: Reviewing progress and addressing remaining issues.
What EMDR Therapy is NOT.
EMDR therapy is not a one-time fix, nor is it used to uncover repressed memories. For instance, if you're uncertain about something that may have occurred, we won't use EMDR to "dig it up," but we can employ it to reduce or eliminate the distress caused by thinking about such events. EMDR doesn't aim to erase memories or induce forgetfulness. Instead, it can help you develop a more balanced or positive outlook on the issues being addressed, so they don't dominate your thoughts every day.
